At the plenary on Tuesday, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Lere Oyewumi sponsored the motion on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday. Sen Oyewumi urged the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to ensure a seamless continuation of their education in Nigeria
"It is pathetic that Medical Graduates from Ukraine Universities have drawn the attention of the National Assembly since 2022. In 2023, the House of Representatives and the Federal Ministry of Health concluded with the Medical and Dental Council to allow the students who graduated from Medical Schools in Ukraine to participate in the qualifying exam like other students, or at best, organize a makeup program for them before the exam.
The Motion is based on the parent's visit to the National Complex to lodge their complaint during the vacation. Senator Oyewumi met with the parents and visited the Medical And Dental Council on behalf of the National Assembly to lodge their complaint. My intervention resulted in the extension of the deadline for payment to 1 month from 1 and a half weeks, he said
Sen Oyewumi recommended, (i) Direct the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council to extend the payment of 1.5 million dead-lines to one Month.
(ii) Direct the council to allow any other students who graduated before or after 2022 and are interested in the training to be allowed after paying the prescribed fee.
(iii) Direct the Council to allow all students who graduated from Ukraine in 2023, especially where the war did not affect the University activities, to sit for the MDCN exams coming up in July and November 2024 without any discrimination.
(IV) Direct the council to, in no distant time, work toward the conduct of the MDCN Exams in each Geo-political Zone of the country like the Law Schools, to reduce the cost of the students and their parents.
He called on the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to “allow students who have completed their final exams, to register for the MDCN in Nigeria and allow them to prove themselves.” After debates on the motion at the plenary presided over by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, the Senate adopted.
