The Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Akogun Lere Oyewumi as a guest of Sen. Solomon Adeola Yayi, Senate Chairman on Appropriation, alongside several esteemed personalities, including Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Kashim Shetima, Governors and Senators, storm Iperu community in the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, in celebration of the 37th annual Akesan Day festival, which held on Saturday, November 25, 2023.
The cultural festival was symbolised by the legendary Akesan Baale Oja, who remains a symbol of heroic exploits, valour, and self-sacrifice for the common good of the Iperu people. Akesan is the mythical founder of Iperu, an ancient town in Ogun, South-Western Nigeria. Oral history has it that Akesan was a daughter to an Alaafin who along with her husband Ajagbe migrated from Ile Ife to finally settle in Iperu around the 13th or 14th century. The event was filled with vibrant cultural displays, performances, and activities that showcased the diversity and vibrancy of the community.
